Many people are embarrassed to visit their doctor to have a consultation for their hemorrhoids. It is important to remember that hemorrhoids is a common ailment in the United States for people who are in their fifties and above.

Consulting a doctor when you are experiencing the symptoms of hemorrhoids is always the best thing to do because there are other medical conditions and diseases that have almost similar symptoms like that of hemorrhoids. Your doctor can confirm that the symptoms you have are due to hemorrhoids and not other diseases or medical conditions.

If you don’t have a family doctor to consult with, you can go to other general practitioners like the gastroenterologists, proctologists, and the colon and rectal surgeons who have expertise regarding hemorrhoids.

When consulting a doctor, it is important to describe the symptoms in a detailed manner to have a correct diagnosis for your hemorrhoids. These are some of the issues that you must carefully describe to the doctor: pain, bleeding, mucus or pus, change in bowel habit, change in the shape and characteristics of your stool, swelling, itching, and bulges and protrusions.

Pain – The anal area have many nerve endings that is why it is sensitive to pain. Painful flare-ups are caused by external hemorrhoids. When an internal hemorrhoids are prolapsed, they are also painful. But, not all hemorrhoids will give you the painful feeling.

Bleeding – The color of the blood is an indicator of the location of the bleeding – bright red is from the anal canal and dark red is from the colon. Bleeding does not always indicates hemorrhoids. It can also be associated with more serious medical conditions like colorectal cancer and ulcer.

Mucus or pus – Having some mucus or pus discharge is not associated with hemorrhoids.

Change in bowel habit – When you are under emotional stress, tension, trauma, or diet change, a change will occur in your bowel habit where alternating or chronic diarrhea and constipation may happen.

Change in the shape and characteristics of your stool – When your stool is colored brown or yellow and good in form, then you have a healthy stool. But when there is a change in the shape or color of your stool, it can be a symptom of other medical conditions but not hemorrhoids.

Swelling – A person with hemorrhoids will always have the swelling symptom, but this may also mean other medical conditions like infection.

Itching – Hemorrhoids, food and medicine allergies, skin diseases, stress, etc. can cause chronic itching.

Bulges and protrusions – Prolapsed internal hemorrhoids will cause bulges in the anal canal while external hemorrhoids will have hard bulges located outside of the opening of the anal area.

Not all of these symptoms will lead to a diagnosis of hemorrhoids. Consulting a doctor is not an embarrassing moment. Instead, it is the best way to find out if what you are having are hemorrhoids or not.

Asian Herbs

I have found Chinese herb formulations quite effective in treating hemorrhoid symptoms. It is now easy to find these herbs, since there are Chinese herb store in most cities. If not, it is easy to go to the Internet and find what you need.

These herbs usually come in pill form; but you can also get storeowners to mix you a formulation of dried herbs by simply telling them what ailment you are trying to treat. Most herbal stores usually have an acupuncturist that can diagnose your problem and prescribe a precise herbal combination.

These Chinese hemorrhoid herbs contain chemicals that are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, increase blood circulation, and lift Chi. Chi is the life force that powers all body and mind functions.

When checking these Chinese formulations just make sure the manufacturers note that they are low in heavy metals.

Hemorrhoid Cures

Hemorrhoids can be treated at every stage. Many people who suffer from them find relief by means of home treatment. In case they have not succeeded to alleviate the symptoms, they usually undergo nonsurgical treatments, the so called fixative procedures. These techniques are most successful in hemorrhoid units from the first and second stage. If the hemorrhoids have got severe – third and fourth stages, surgical treatment is recommended.

What are the fixative procedures?

Fixative procedures are alternative for surgery of the hemorrhoids. They include:

• Light coagulation: This procedure stops the blood circulation to the hemorrhoid unit by causing the affected tissue to shrink and die.

• Rubber band ligation: This method uses a rubber band to tie the base of the hemorrhoid unit and cut it off from the blood circulation and as a result it dies and falls of in about a week.

• Cryotherapy: A device called Zeroid has recently been available as an alternative treatment of hemorrhoids. This uses cryotherapy as a home treatment procedure. The device is a plastic cylinder 15 mm in diameter and 6 sm long and contains a gel which could be frozen in the freezer or in the refrigerator. The device is introduced into the rectum. As it taws in the rectal canal, the temperature of the inside tissues gets lower. The action of thawing takes up from 5 to 10 minutes. The devise is inserted twice daily and the treatment continues for about 3 weeks. This method relieves the symptoms – eliminates discomfort and pain and stops bleeding episodes. In some cases a considerable shrinkage of the hemorroidal lumps can be observed.

• Lazer coagulation: Lasers used in medicine provide an alternative to the conservative treatment of hemorrhoids. Lazer coagulation is a relatively easy and painless procedure which cuts off blood supply to the hemorroidal unit.

What are the natural cures for alternative treatment of hemorrhoids?

Natural remedies are easy to be applied at home and keep the hemorrhoids of becoming worse or of recurring after fixative procedures. These include:

• Lidocaine: Applied on the affected area in the form of a jelly or a spray, it numbs the skins and alleviates the pain and irritation from hemorrhoids.

• Topical analgetics: They offer a temporary pain relief and do not fight the whole range of the hemorrhoid symptoms.

• High-fiber diet: To strengthen the veins of the anus and rectum and prevent hemorrhoids occurrence, one should include in his diet cherries, blackberries, butcher’s broom and flavonoids. Tha latter are plant pigments which are found in fruit, soy beans and tea.

• Pilewort: This is a plant (Ranunculusficaria) which could be applied as an ointment or taken as tea. It reduces the pain of external hemorrhoids successfully.

• Emu oil: Applied as an ointment on the affected area it strengthens the tissues, alleviates the pain and discomfort from external hemorrhoids.

• Sitting baths: This procedure presents an easy alleviation of pain and hemorrhoid prevention. You need to dip the affected area in a tub full of lukewarm water for about 15 minutes two or three times daily.

How to remove External Hemorrhoids?

Home remedies for internal hemorrhoids

ぢ/Hemorrhoid

Hemorrhoids in pregnancy can turn an otherwise healthy pregnancy into a nightmare. Read on to see why pregnant women get hemorrhoids and what you can do to prevent or relieve hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

As a certified nurse midwife I have treated many cases of pregnancy and hemorrhoids. It was not until I personally experienced hemorrhoids during pregnancy that I understood how painful these little monsters can be.

What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen varicose veins on or around the anus. The veins within the anal canal become swollen because of weakened vein walls allowing blood to pool. This causes the walls of the vein to expand creating the visible ball on the outside of the anus called a hemorrhoid.

What causes pregnancy hemorrhoids?

Pregnancy requires a woman to increase her total blood volume by 40% to accommodate her growing baby nutrition and circulatory needs. This increase in blood volume requires that the pregnant woman’s blood vessels relax and expand to hold the extra blood. This is one of the major reasons why pregnant women are prone to blood clots, varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

Pregnant women are also prone to constipation due to extra fluid absorption and relaxation of the bowels.

Constipation combined with the increased pressure on the rectum and perineum due to the growing baby is another reason for hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

Types of pregnancy hemorrhoids:

Internal hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

You can’t see or feel these hemorrhoids, but straining or irritation from a passing stool can injure a hemorrhoid’s delicate surface and cause it to bleed. You may notice small amounts of bright red blood on your toilet tissue or in the toilet bowl water. Because internal anal membranes lack pain-sensitive nerve fibers, these hemorrhoids usually don’t cause discomfort. Occasionally, straining can push an internal hemorrhoid through the anal opening. If a hemorrhoid remains displaced (prolapsed), it can cause pain and irritation.

External hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

These hemorrhoids tend to be painful. Sometimes blood may pool in an external hemorrhoid and form a clot (thrombus) causing severe pain, swelling and inflammation. When irritated, external hemorrhoids can itch or bleed. The pain of hemorrhoids may be comparable to being stabbed in the rectum by a knife or hot poker.

What can you do to treat hemorrhoids during pregnancy?

The good news is that hemorrhoids usually improve after the baby is born. In the meantime, there are a number of things you can do to treat hemorrhoids. Any one or more of the following may help relieve hemorrhoids during pregnancy:

Take a warm bath with baking soda or place baking soda (wet or dry) on the area to reduce itching.

Use witch hazel to reduce swelling or bleeding.

Use Tucks Medicated Pads.

Avoid sitting or standing for long periods.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Drink prune juice.

Do not delay going to the bathroom.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

If you are suffering very badly from pregnancy hemorrhoids please consult with your obstetric provider for hemorrhoid medication.
